Welcome to the website of European Networks of Orientalism.
We are an international group of researchers who work on Orientalism,
a term understood both in its historical sense (Western scholarship on Asian
and North African languages and cultures) and in Edward Said’s broader defi-
nition of Orientalism as a discourse that describes, controls, and to a certain
degree creates the Orient as Europe’s cultural other.
With individual areas of research expertise spanning different languages,
genres, and historical periods, we collaborate to reach a more holistic
understanding of the following five key areas:
1. The translation of 'Oriental' literature and religious texts into European
languages and their secondary translation from one European language
into others
2. History of the book and publication practices
3. Institutional histories of Oriental Studies and Comparative Literature
4. The history of knowledge
5. Literary representations of 'Oriental' cultures, races and religions
